Snow Make-up Days Scheduled for Oconee Schools

The Oconee County District School Office has set the dates for making up the missed school days this week due to winter weather.

Oconee County School Superintendent John Jackson released a letter Friday announcing the snow make-up dates scheduled to replace the school days missed this week.

In a letter to school parents, students and staff, Dr. Jackson said Oconee students will be making up three of the five days missed this week due to icy road conditions. The two other days missed will be "forgiven" for students as permitted by provisions in Georgia State Law.

The make-up days are as follows:

  • Monday, Feb. 14
  • Tuesday, Feb. 15
  • Monday, March 14

These three days were already in this year's school calendar as possible make-up days for Oconee students.

The state allows Georgia school districts four emergency days in the school calendar year before requiring a special waiver or scheduling the make-up days at the end of the year.

The law does not provide "forgiven" days for teachers and certain staff therefore meaning the two days the students will not have to make up, the teachers will be in-session.

Jackson said the district office is "working on developing a plan that provides several options" for the teachers and certain staff members and will announce it by Tuesday, Jan. 25.

Editor's Note:  Forbes.com ran an article today with a request from national civil rights leaders asking school districts in  Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina to "scrap plans" made by some districts in these states to use the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday as a snow make-up day.
