A fun event to support a great cause.
The Oconee County Historical Society and Rev. John Andrew Chapter of the DAR hosted a celebrity softball game and home run derby fundraiser on Friday night at Rocket Field.
A large crowd came out to watch the Oconee County dignitaries play ball. The teammates included the Sheriff Scott Berry, Watkinsville police, school board members, county commissioners, and city council members, among others. Watkinsville Mayor Joe Walter led the Rockets and County Commission Chair Melvin Davis led the Thrillers.
After hearing too many calls they did not like, the Thrillers marched toward the umpire behind home plate to handcuff his wrists and ankles.
In the end, a tie was declared 24-24.
The money raised at the softball game will help pay for a new Watkinsville City Cemetery entrance sign, which will be revealed at the cemetery bicentennial celebration in September.
