A 58-year-old Watkinsville woman was struck by a car Wednesday evening and later pronounced dead at an area hospital, according to the Athens Banner-Herald. The Oconee County Sheriff's Office has identified the victim as Lynda Kelley.
The accident occurred around 6:20 p.m. at the intersection of Union Church and Evans roads, according to a Nixle alert sent by the Sheriff's Office.
"It appears that she had crossed the road to get her mail and was struck while crossing back over the roadway. The investigation is ongoing," the Sheriff's Office posted on Facebook.
A public information officer with the Georgia State Patrol Thursday said the 16-year-old driver of the car, a Toyota Camry, was checked at the scene for a minor injury.
"She is not facing any charges in the crash as there were no contributing actions on her part," the GSP PIO said.
First responders Wednesday were also dispatched to the scene of an overturned vehicle on US 441 and Hog Mountain Road. Chief Deputy Lee Weems said Oconee County Fire and Rescue personnel had to extricate occupants from one of two vehicles involved. The accident resulted in three people being transported for treatment of minor injuries, according to the article on onlineathens.com.
The Sheriff's Office on Facebook reported that it had been a very busy night.
"Units also responded to a wreck in the Lowe's parking lot. Every ambulance in Oconee County was simultaneously transporting patients."
All road closures were reopened by 8 p.m.
Wednesday's fatal accident was the third to occur in the county in as many weeks. An Athens man was struck by a car and killed last Thursday on the SR 10 Loop while he was aiding another motorist. The body of a Fortson, Ga. man was found Nov. 1 in a crashed SUV on the SR 10 Loop exit 20 ramp to the Oconee Connector.
