Over the past two weeks, more than 500 school supplies were collected during a drive organized by the Ellis Pain Center in coordination with the Oconee Enterprise and the Oconee County Chamber of Commerce.  The three businesses served as drop-off locations during the drive, which began on July 20 and wrapped up on Monday.

Paper, pens, pencils, rulers, crayons, glue and even backpacks were among the donations.

"We just wanted to give back to the schools," said Ashley Roten of Ellis Pain Center. "We know that some families unfortunately cannot afford to get school supplies, so we wanted to help out as best as we can."

Roten said Ellis Pain Center hopes to turn the school supply drive into an annual service project.

Ellis Pain Center also donated checks in the amount of $1,000 to Rocky Branch Elementary, Colham Ferry Elementary, High Shoals Elementary, Malcom Bridge Elementary, Oconee County Primary and Oconee County Elementary.  The principal of each school at the Chamber office Tuesday morning received the check and a large box of supplies.

A couple of the principals already had uses for the money in mind.

Oconee County Elementary's principal Nannette Varela said she plans to buy additional needed supplies for students on an as-needed basis throughout the year.

"We have several things on our wish list," said Evelyn Wages, principal of Rocky Branch Elementary. "We know we need some books."

Corrections: There was misspelling of Ashley Roten's name. Also, all schools received $1,000. Corrections have been made.
