Oconee Today - Sept. 2

A First Friday in Watkinsville celebration, final day for qualifying for mayor or city council in Bogart, and an appearance on the Lifetime Network by a local author are a few things to know about in Oconee today.

 

Weather: Sunny skies with high temperatures approaching the high 90s. Expect clear skies overnight and a low temperatures dipping down to the high 60s, according to the National Weather Service.

Things to Know

  • Today is the final day of qualifying for mayor and city council in Bogart. All interested candidates must file a notice of candidacy and pay registration fees by 4 p.m. today.
  • Today is First Friday in the city of Watkinsville and runs from 6 to 9 p.m. The event includes food, artist booths and music. There will also be free activities for kids, such as hayrides, a mister tent and a moonwalk.
  • Oconee County Farmers Market vendor and author Dac Crossley will be on the Lifetime Network's "The Balancing Act," Friday morning from 7 to 8 a.m., where he will discuss his latest book, Escape from the Alamo.

The Red Oak Southern String Band will be performing at today's First Friday event.
The Red Oak Southern String Band (ROSSB) is a Watkinsville/Athens, GA based acoustic music group that plays a mix of traditional bluegrass, folk and blues tunes as well more contemporary folk and blues music. The members of The Red Oak Southern String Band have played together for over 10 years.

The band has played such venues at the Athens Folk and Dance Societies' monthly HOOT at the Melting Point in Athens, The Art at the Rock Art Show at the 4H Center in Eatonton, The Railroad Arts District Art Show in Athens, The Jefferson Foliage Festival, The Oconee County Farmer's Market, a wedding at Ashford Manor, The Green Room during Athfest, The Winterville Pavillion and many other events including weddings, birthday parties and anniversary parties.
