Oconee Today -- Nov. 29

The first snow of the season, the 2011 Can-A-Thon, and a pet food drive are a few of the things to know about in Oconee today.

Weather: Snow before 1 p.m. is likely, but forecasters don't expect it to accumulate. Wind gusts of up to 20 mph are possible and the high temperature will be around 42 degrees.

Top things to know about:

  • The 2011 Annual Can-A-Thon to benefit the Area Churches Together Serving is in full swing.  Every school now through Dec. 9 is collecting non-perishable items for the Food Bank.
  • Cats and dogs are also in need of your kindness. The Athens Area Humane Society is holding a pet food drive with goal of feeding 100 pets this holiday season.  Please drop off donations of unopened packages of cat or dog food or money at the Spay and Neuter Center.
  • Oconee County Commissioners are set to discuss a recommendation for tobacco free parks at their work session this evening.  It begins at 7 p.m. in the courthouse.  The complete agenda is attached as a pdf.
  • ArtLand Loft -- a gallery located above Chops & Hops that will host  international and local artists -- celebrates a grand opening from 7-9 p.m. The first featured artist is Hatidza Mulic, a UGA art instructor and international painter.
