Oconee Today -- June 21

Meet and hear from candidates seeking local offices at the Oconee County GOP and Oconee County Democratic Committee meetings this evening.

Weather: Happy Thursday!  We'll see partly cloudy skies and highs in the low 90s once again.  The Weather Channel predicts a low near 70 degrees overnight.

Observances:

Did you know skateboarding originated in California around the 1940s when surfers wanted something to “surf” while the water was flat? And there's even a day set aside as "Go Skateboarding Day." Today is that day. Check out these skate parks in the area:

Top things to know:

  • From 7:15 a.m. to 6:15 p.m., you can stop in and give blood during a drive at Athens Regional Medical Center in the medical services building.  Blood and double red cells are needed. Learn more about blood donation on the American Red Cross website.
  • Candidates for the Oconee County offices of Sheriff, Chairman of the Board of Commissioners and Board of Commissioners Posts 1 and 4 are scheduled to speak at a candidates forum hosted by the Oconee County GOP.  It starts at 7 p.m. at the Watkinsville Community Center.
  • Many candidates have also confirmed they'll swing by the Oconee County Democratic Committee's meeting, which starts at 7 p.m. in the Adult Learning Center.
