Oconee Students Explore Science at Fifth Annual Fair and Discovery Night

The top four projects by fourth and fifth graders were awarded Monday at the Oconee County Civic Center.

Merritt Arnold, a 5th grade teacher at Malcom Bridge Elementary School, uses a Georgia Power PowerTOWN to teach about electrical safety.

The top eight science fair projects from each of Oconee County's elementary schools were on display at the Civic Center Monday for the fifth annual Science Fair Discovery Night.

The event, featuring work by fourth and fifth grade students, was sponsored by the Oconee County Association of Educators.

1st Place: "Wind Turbine Blade Design" by Alex Moore of CFES

2nd Place: "Berry Fresh" by Nick Crowe of MBES

3rd Place: "Going Nuts" by Zachary Morin of HSES

Honorable Mention:"Bread vs. Candy Bar" by Ben Maddux of CFES

Aside from viewing the projects, children enjoyed making "goo" from a mixture of Borax, polyvinyl alcohol and food coloring, and had hair-raising experiences with a Van de Graaff generator.
