In keeping with annual tradition, Oconee County Middle School held a veterans day program on Nov. 9, 2012.

Honored speaker David Williams, a veteran of the United States Army Engineer Command, spoke about his service during the Vietnam War and related his experience to recent times.

"You students have witnessed wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and you know what it's like." he said.  "There are long, long days overseas and long, long days at home."

Williams, a charter member of the Oconee County Veterans Memorial Foundation, urged those in attendence to think about the military not only on days of observance.

"Keep our veterans in mind.  Keep our service people in mind," he said. "When we go to the soccer field, the ball field... why do you think our park is named Veterans Memorial Park? Ponder that.  Why do you think Oconee County Veterans Memorial sits at the entrance of Oconee Veterans Park? Think about that."
