Loganville Mother Shoots Burglar, But What If She Hadn't Been Armed?

A burglar was shot by a Loganville homeowner Friday morning, but what could have happened had she not been armed?

Guns, whether or not to have one, whether or not to ban certain types and whether or not to make public the names of permitted owners — all of these are questions on the minds of many since the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings last month in Connecticut. Lawmakers at local and federal levels are looking for ways to ease people's fears and to protect the public from such random acts of violence. How to do it, however, is where the difficulties become evident.

The latest controversy has been around a choice by a New York newspaper to publish the names of permitted gun owners as reported in The Huffington Post. A Connecticut lawmaker, in the state still reeling from the Sandy Hook tragedy, also wants all the names of the permitted gun owners in that state to be made public. According to Fox News, this would reverse a 20-year law that requires this information be kept private.

Friday's shooting of a burglar in Loganville by a young mother, however, shines a different light on the situation.

According to the Walton County Sheriff's Office, a young Loganville mother called to report a burglar breaking into her home before retreating to an attic crawl space with her two young children. When the burglar located her there, she shot him six times, hitting him five. He is in a critical condition in the hospital.

This begs the question, what would the outcome have been had she not had the gun? The deputies were on their way — could a hostage situation have ensued?

Another question is what could have happened had her name, address and her gun ownership been know, what then? Would her house have been one that was bypassed by the burglar as a result, thus averting the situation for her entirely? But could that then have resulted in an unarmed neighbor being the victim instead? Or would the perpetrator, knowing he faced the possibility of facing an armed homeowner and approached the situation differently, possibly arming himself? Is this outcome more the exception and not the norm?

What is your opinion? Was the result the best outcome under the circumstances or is there a better way to handle the troubling issue of gun violence in today's society?

In this world there are good people and there are evil people. The only thing really protecting good people from evil is their right to bear arms.
Bravo Zulu to the young mother in Loganville. You are an awesome mom and deserving of the highest respect. Your children are very lucky.
Also, make sure you reload that gun, there are more bad guys out there and there always will be, no matter how many laws there are.

I applaud her bravery, gun ownership, and gun knowledge!!!! I'd have to believe that guy was not there to burglarize the house, otherwise while they were hiding in the attic crawlspace he would have snatched what he wanted and got out as fast as he could, but instead went searching for the woman and her kids?! This is just 100% proof that the Second Amendment was made for a reason and should not be taken away from us.... otherwise the headlines would have read, Loganville woman and 2 Children found dead in attic!
On another note, I don't think listing who does and doesn't own guns will improve anything! I think doing that will only let criminals know where the free guns are and they will simply wait for the homeowners to leave to go in or bring their own weapon in hopes to kill the residents before taking their guns!

CW - You are right. How do criminals get guns? They steal them or buy those that were stolen. When you publish the location of people who legally own guns you just create a shopping list for the bad guys. They wait for the residents to leave and walk right in knowing they will score weapons. By publishing the location of legal firearms, the far left are actually endangering everybody, including themselves, by enabling criminals to take advantage.
In the bigger picture, and conversely, the criminals now know which homes do not legally own firearms, which would be useful information to a bad guy too.

Yes Racer X, because they're idiots and they don't care who they endanger. As long as t hey can remain in power, that's the ONLY thing that matters to them. Very sad what our society has come to that we do need guns to protect ourselves, but a facts a fact. However, far left has NEVER relied on 'facts'. They're fiction, all the way.

A tenant had me to come fix a problem. While there I saw an old long-barrelled .38 revolver lying on her nightstand. I commented that she shouldn't leave her gun out where anyone who came in the house could see it. She said that she didn't let people in her home. I said, "You let me in." She said that she trusted me. I said that a person she trusted might carelessly mention the gun to someone else, and that someone else come over and break in while she was gone out and steal her gun. She said, "When I ain't here it ain't here."

I absolutely agree. If there were published stories disclosing the homeowners who had weapons, a criminal could use that kind of map to break into one house that had a weapon, steal it and walk next door to the house that does not have weapons. Publications that list gun-owners are inversely putting non-weapon owners in danger, since it provides a detailed map of houses that are not defended. As a legally licensed gunowner, I did not give up my right to privacy when I received my license.Publication of gunowner's name and addresses provide a perfect map for those intending to do harm and other criminals. Everyone seems to be tying gun ownership to the tragedy in Sandy Hook. That tragedy was carried out by a mentally ill person. Using Sandy Hook as a basis to change gun laws is not presenting a clear reason for gun law changes. Our government is failing to provide treatment to the mentally ill. That shooter's mother tried to do everything right and get treatment for her son. Instead, he murdered her and then went on a rampage.

I say WTG mama...I am like CW, if he had only been there to steal things..why look for her...steal the stuff and get away...No, I think he was there for a more serious crime...AND since she had seen his face, Lord only knows what he had on his mind....so WTG mama, you protected yourself and your kids....Now the thief's mother will probably sue the mother saying that he was a "good boy" and was only there to make sure she was OK and really meant no harm......even with his long arrest record, he was a "good boy".

Has any media posted, in print or online a list of folks who pay their taxes, drive their vehicles according to the rules, pay for the items they go to a store for, and on and on with everyday instances where folks follow the law(s). Then why did that rag feel that the public had a 'right' to know what folks have a legitimately owned firearm? It serves no purpose except to sell newspapers, none whatsoever. That one person posted the addresses and phone numbers of the staff of that rag, does serve a purpose, it identifies and locates the dangerous imbeciles we all have to contend with anymore.
That woman may regret that she didn't kill that criminal outright. Some shyster attorney m,ay take up his case in civil court and sue her for violating his 'civil rights' when she shot him. I am sure his momma has already exclaimed that he "was such a good boy" or words to that effect. It's how multigenerational criminal families are. The only hope is that he dies, but ony after suffering the physicl pain he obviously sought to inflict on that woman and her children.

Interesting contrast to this shooting yesterday was this shooting yesterday :

http://www.wsbtv.com/news/news/local...urglary/nTmk3/

This is a Excellent Example of why law-abiding folks should have regular capacity magazines.

This story's outcome is in stark contrast to the shooting in Fairburn yesterday. Both were home invasion, in both the women hid, in both they were discovered, but in the Fairburn one the lady homeowner was unarmed and she was shot several times. Also what if in the event she had been faced with 2 intruders(like the Fairburn invasion) would 6 total shots been enough? She put five .38 Special slugs in the guy(face and chest) and he was still able to leave the scene, thankfully it was enough to get herself and her children to safety, but what if there were one or more intruders....she's out of ammo. But this illustrates a need for law-abiding people to own regular(media says "hi-capacity" I say regular) capacity magazines slap full of the best hollow points money can buy.

Her shooting skills were exemplary(5 out of 6 hit their mark) for a high stress shooting, better in fact than most police involved shootings. So the idea that regular folks can't shoot without mandated training is hogwash. (I don't know for a fact she wasn't trained it's just an assumption)

As much as I admire her courage and skill, I have a warning for her and others.
Keep a low profile after such incidents, her family name and address are already on public access.

The recent publication of names and information of gun permit holder/owners is a signal to the wrong element, criminal and governmental bureaucrats, to use this information for their selfish purposes.

Remember the Germans confiscated French firearms using lists maintained by the French government.
Had a few thinking Frenchmen, if they existed, had destroyed the records -- who knows ?

The maps published recently are a shopping list for thugs and terrorists whether your name is on the list or not.

Newspapers should not publish victims addresses, video of the location and any other identifying information, UNLESS, it is released with the express permission of the victim, family and other impacted individuals -- Neighbors etc.

Your privacy and SAFETY should not be compromised for the sake of a "NEWS" story.

REMEMBER
Channel 2 et al will not be there to protect YOU, but only to KICK THE TIN (air craft accident investigation term).

If you take issue with such an action as this, then as a non-gun owner you should also take issue with the publishing of gun owner info as it lists you as non-owner thru process of elimination.

Perhaps the points of those who will NOT support the efforts resulting in more gun regulation remember the government made a solemn commitment to NOT allow access to these types of records because:

1)They were confidential for government business only.
2) The records would be destroyed after short term use.

Our government has proven it CAN’T be trusted on EITHER front when those records found their way to the Internet.

PERHAPS, someone should release a map that contains those with DUI arrests, note I DIDN’T specify convictions – that may have a far more reaching affect on our public safety…

In Georgia, you have the right to use deadly force in defense of your home. From the sound of it, it's good the woman had a gun and good that she had it where she could get to it. For the full details regarding the conditions in which you can use deadly force in defense of habitation, read O.C.G.A. 16-3-23 http://www.lexisnexis.com/hottopics/gacode/ or http://www.georgiapacking.org/GaCode/?title=16&chapter=3&section=23

There isn't a real solution. Criminals will continue to obtain guns and use them. They agree to the terms of their probation or parole and then violate it. There are places I would have a firearm, at home for protection and when driving alone. I never would have thought about having a weapon 10 years ago. Now I feel it is necessary for my peace of mind.

The recent publication of "registered" gun owners by that New York paper is positive proof that the reluctance of gun owners to be registered is very well founded. It is that very scenario, which many claimed was "gun-nut paranoia", that was feared. An unaccountable entity has, through legal loopholes, used information collected by the government to endanger innocent, law-abiding citizens for political reasons. The harm inflicted on those citizens will be nearly impossible to rectify without moving and changing their identities. The paper could easily publish that info as well.
I will contact my state representatives and ask them to author and pass a law in Georgia to hold any entity as accountable for this kind of action as we would anyone who knowingly releases sensitive government information that would put tens of thousands of innocent civilians in jeopardy. I think they call it treason.

Yes EVERYONE who breaks into a home takes the time to check attic CRAWL spaces / access areas...

The bullet placement results may very well be due to the shear closeness of the perpetrator to the woman, after he opened the door to the attic access area, usually not a lot of open space in places like this...

I'm not sure where to even begin after that post...ok, here goes.. In my opinion only, for him to have been shot that many times, tells me that he was advancing on her. Why the attic? What's to steal there? He had a purpose in going there. Someone else said that if his intent was to steal, he would have stolen and ran. Once he realized there was someone home, that would still have been an option.

"He even rang the doorbell"...lol. Of course he had a million excuses. Let's believe a criminal over someone who has a right to be safe in their home. If you've ever interrogated a criminal, you'd know they lie to protect number one. That's the point of interrogation, to get the truth, because you're dealing with someone tha the truth does not come natural to. If they were honest, they wouldn't be thieves. Like Baretta used to say, 'if you can't do the time, then don't do the crime". Translated to this situation, if you don't want to get shot, don't be in someone else's house that doesn't belong to you with the INTENT to steal from them. Sorry, FFT, GOt to disagree to the umpth degree with you on this one.

After some thought, I propose the only logical and immediate solution would be for the public to pressure Gannett to either:
A) Fund twenty-four hour intensive police (or National Guard) protection for every neighborhood, street and subdivision in Westchester and Rockland counties for the foreseeable future, or
B) Fund self-defense and firearms training for every citizen of those counties who requested it. Also included in their reparation should be any fee associated with firearm registration and any legal fees incurred by the residents in regard to their application. That would reshuffle the deck.

Which do you think they would choose? I bet I know which would be cheaper.

Would it be God's will that they should die too? What if you survived and your children were killed? Would you rather live with the guilt of not protecting your children and allowing them to be brutally murdered or the guilt of killing a man to protect them?
Do you lock your house at night or do you just leave the door open in case God decides it's your night to die? It's fairly obvious you have never been responsible for anyone else's safety, nor, likely, your own.

Well Amy, you have every right to your convictions on this as long as you don't tell others that they can't have theirs. I think that's the rub. Too many want everyone to change their psoition to fit a political agenda and that's not right. I feel differently as far as taking a life though. I wouldn't want the death of another on my hands either. but I'd rather have the death of someone trying to harm my babies on my hands than have the death of one of my babies at his hands on my conscience. I couldn't live with myself if my child died and I did nothing. And I believe that there is God's perfect will and God's permissable will, which means it may not be His timing, but he allows it due to our not following His direction. Many people die outside His will. The bible says that there is an enemy roaring around looking to destroy us. We're to be on alert and make sure we are hearing his voice. Many don't and end their lives too soon. Not trying to sermonize (lol), just my belief is a little different and I was sharing same as you (so don't crucify me for sharing an opinion-lol). I actually had an experience in that. One time I felt a strong impression to go a different way. It was a longer way around, so I started not to do it. But the impression was so strong that I did. Turned out at that time, there was a wreck that happened on the route that I would have gone on and a transfer truck hit a car and ripped it in two. Off the subject, so back to regularly scheduled subject.

But leave it to the race baiters to do so. They are the ones that cry fowl the most and the loudest. Very hypocritical if you ask me. You want to judge people based on their beliefs, just as anti-gun people assume they can read a criminal's mind. Boggles my mind.

I dunno Tammy, it's just how I feel. I can't help it. My frame of reference is that I'm a Black woman. You're obviously a White person, and I can't begin to tell you what it's like to be White. My life as a Black person has been easy. I've never (overtly) been the victim of racism. My parents are immigrants, they came to the USA with two suitcases and the clothes on their backs. They lived the American dream and became homeowners, put us kids through college, and are retired happily. So maybe I've lived a sheltered life. I don't know the race of most of the people who post on this site, but they frighten me. I never knew such wicked people existed in this world. To wish death upon anyone. And I came to this realization during another discussion me and you had about another shooting. You know what I'm talking about. That discussion coupled with this one is really shaping my mind. The South is an evil place. I didn't listen to African-Americans who lived up North when they told me that moving down South is a big mistake.

Amy, you know what? I didn't know the guy was black either, until you posted it on your comment. And you know what? I don't care about the color of a criminal. I was raised to look not at the color of a man's skin, but the character of his heart...isn't that what Dr. King taught us?

Your comment is completely wrong. God fearing people have fought back for centuries. This 'it's my time' line of reasoning completely removes the very mind and soul differences between man and animal. I so hope you don't live near me...I want neighbors I can count on in a life or death fight!

Well RX and JS, what do you expect? Liberals can't argue with real life examples so have to pull the race card out. Par for the course. I'd be embarrassed to post something like that. Not trying to offend, but that type of accusation angers people for obvious reasons. How would you like it if someone accused you (amy) of that? You wouldn't like it and would swear it isn't true, wouldn't you? I don't get offended easily, but that's one that'll do it for me. Not trying to hurt your feelings, but you've bought into that line of thinking without actually finding out whether it's even true or not. You brought it into play. This story is not about that. Even the media hasn't picked up on it. That tells me that finally, people are beginning to see the bigger picture. That's good news.
And even though I don't agree with people who wish death upon a perpetrator, I do understand that they are angry at a system that might allow this person to walk away as a so called "victim". Unfortunately, we have people out there with a skewed sense of justice and those things happen. Folks on here lash out in anger in defense of the "real" victims. Bottom line is, I'd love to live in a utopia where no one ever HAS need of something like a weapon. but as long as bad guys victimize the good guys and hurt innocent babies, I want to defend the innocen who have every right to live free from harm by another.

Well, Amy, I do understand that you might come from a different perspective and that would make for a good conversation. I just came from a meeting yesterday where I was the only white woman in the room. Those folks are my friends that I do ministry with. We talked extensively about the victim mentality and how we've GOT to get past it. I told them about an incident where I used to work and how the mothers of young black kids would ask their child what race I was and base whether they should behave on my race (don't havet o obey that white lady). Really. I hope thta kid won't end up in the judicial system because it's "somebody else's fault". Fortunately, because he and I had built a rapport with one another based on doing what's right, he defended me to his mother. I have hope for him. I've watched the evolution of white america over the past 30-40 years. White America (2 generations later) is finally getting equality and rejoicing in it. When obama was elected, I congratulated my black friends because I knew what it meant to them. Most white people feel the same way. We are eager to walk side by side. I had hoped he would be like Herman Cain and be color blind and help others be the same way. The "race card" comments anger us for that reason. Rep[ublicans ran Herman Cain for President. Why? Because he never let anything stand in his way of living the American dream. He understood the struggle and overcame it in America. He wants others to do the same.

And Amy, those "wicked" people come in all shapes, sizes and races. I've gotten it from all sides. Look at some in holloy wood and politics. There are many who have wished death on others. They are there. But I don't camp out there. That's where I see a problem. People only see the bad, concentrate on it and let it skew their perception. People on here are upset with a bad guy - period. Read Walter Williams, Larry Elder, Thomas Sowell, even the bio of Herman Cain. Those are some mighty intelligent and common sense people who have earned the right to address racial issues in America. Their perception is very balanced. They're not one sided (which is whre the problems begin in my opinion). They want to bring healing amongst the races, but few want to hear it because they want to stay angry. Once again, I've always enjoyed your honesty and willingness to be transparent on this forum. You have a good start there. But do know, that there's a whole lot to learn when it comes to the subjects that anger and divide people. People just have to be willing to listen to each other.

I am sorry for offending you. My intent was not to throw stones, but to show you that the people writing in this blog are not racist Southerners. I was born in Illinois and raised in Florida. Mom taught me to look beyond color and judge people by their merit. My wife and I nearly froze helping a family in KY whose car had slid in the ice and fell into a ravine. I didn't care or remember what color they were. They were people in need. I guess the 'ugly' remark got to me, and I had to reply.

Amy, I was not trying to hurt your feelings, but trying to point out that comments like that anger people and may possibly hurt their feelings and thought you should know that. I think up to that point, people were trying to respect your opposing view. It's how you feel. Not everybody has the courage to say that amongst people who are stating the opposite. I hope everyone here can learn from each other and be willing to listen. If you only knew my story...lol Actually, you can find out a little bit by reading a story iI wrote on Patch titled: We are only asking for self governance". It's MY story of what it was like growing up in Atlanta as a young white girl. Maybe you can get some insight and help you to understand why I might feel a bit wounded at being called something I'm not. I think black america needs to hear more stories like that. The media does nothing but pour fuel on a fire and stir up bad feelings amongst people. It's how they make money. That's where I think a lot of attitudes have come from and I think it's sad.

Just so we're clear. I believe the people who want own guns and are mentally capable of handling a gun, should have it. It would be a big mistake to deny people of their right to protect themselves the way they see fit. I also believe that a mother who's in her home, minding her own business, and an intruder comes into her home, uninvited, deserves whatever he gets from her. So people, I'm with you. I'm on your side. It's just that I'm mostly human, and I don't wish death upon anyone. For the people who do that, I think it's evil. Sorry to offend you, but I'm just one person. My comment that it wouldn't be a loss if he died stems from the frustration of the increasing crime rate of these kinds in places I used to feel safe. I have lived in Gwinnett County since 1985 an it has changed dramatically since then. The last 8 years I have lived in an apartment complex in an upper middle class area of Duluth. I work hard so I can live in the safest place possible. My car has been broken into once and my stereo system stolen. Two of the units in my building have had their doors kicked in in the middle of the day and their computers, game systems and TV's taken. My son was closing a business he manages in Duluth and a man wearing a ski mask and carrying a gun walked in and attempted to rob him. My son ran and so did the perp. He was never caught. This person has a track record that shows this is his career choice. I am a compassionate person. I give back to my community, I help people whenever I can. I am just fed up. A person should be able to feel safe in their home. There is something wrong with society when they don't. People that choose to live their lives as criminal swhether petty or violent deserve what they get. This woman and her children shouldn't have to live with the memory of the shooting either. That has to be very traumatizing.

If a person busts open the door to your home it doesn't matter the color, race, gender, etc. What matters is you have just been put in a position that someone just entered your home to murder you and your family. To think of anything less dire you diminish the situation and may not be mentally capable of defending yourself and your family properly. You must accept that either your family "is" going to die, or the intruder is. If you think less of this situation, then you are setting yourself up to be a victim. This felon decided to kill or die when he used his pry bar to break into a home. I do hope that if someone breaks into my home that they do not make it out alive. My goal is simple and twofold. To save my family and the next family this guy will victimize if he gets away. My family knows that if our home is invaded, someone will die. Myself or them. I know that sounds ugly to someone that hasn't faced this before, but read up on home invasions and what happens to families. Someone has to stop them for good. I see nothing at all wrong with that.

I think Jesus would find it for just what it was, a pretty good attempt at humor. As a Christian, I don't find Jesus as a dictator requiring us to find anything we disagree with as bad. I think he has a sense of humor that parallels ours. And yes, I think he might just disseminate it. At least share it with the Pope. They would probably have a good laugh over it.

Oh, by the way, just because you have no sense of humor doesn't mean we have to agree with anything you say. I realize you directed your comment at the writer, Tammy, however, its on a public site for all of us to read. So, just so you know, I don't agree to disagree. You need to get out more, learn to have fun, get a sense of humor. You're going to stress yourself to death.

Actually, the point of the video was to show that people there (texas) are prepared for everything and in full control when they do. that was actuallly the point - especially pointing it out in texas where that is everyday life. Better than chicago where the people with guns have no self control or feeling for others except to rob or kill others. I'd rather know the good guys are ready if something happens (especially if there's a bad guy in the house or shopping mall). Thanks for getting it Mr. B. I have a feeling the same Jesus who told the disciples to take their swords with them would understand perfectly. He understood that the days were evil and always admonished the disciples to be alert (both in prayer, and obviously in the world since the example for them to take their swords with them was obvious).
Sometimes I find that a critical spirit unfortunately trumps a spirit of love in our circles. :(

Yet many apparent interpretations tend to overlook the giving unto Caesar what is Caesar’s and to GOD what is GOD’S…

So many today wish to give ”all to Caesar” and force all others to do the same, resulting a secular theocracy if you will. Because it’s easier than taking the responsibility directly.

Paul brought the man back to life that fell out of the window (Acts 20:9-11), numerous healings on his journey, and well as cast out demons and other miraculous things, (Acts 14:3 - miracles, Acts: 14: 8-10 heals lame man from birth, Acts: 16:16-18 demons possessed girl, Acts: 19: 11-12 heals those who touched his garment, Acts: 20:9-11 brings man that fell out of the window back to life, Acts 28:7-8 heals father of Publius, Acts 28:9 heals sick on Malta.) there are so many more, but the point is that he was anointed by the Lord.
I could go on. that's not misinterpretation, it's simply taking out my bible and reading it. Jesus said that in His name all believers would be able to do this. Ultimately, we leave the results to Him, and many times He has a greater plan and someone goes on to be with Him. BUT there are times that the Lord may say, lay hands on this person and they are healed. I've seen it too many times to doubt that those things are for today. I don't question it if it doesn't turn out the way I want, I simply obey what the Holy Spirit tells me to do. God did work this for His good however, because there may be some who have never read the book of Acts nor heard anyone speak of such a powerful God.

I knew the "correction" was coming...lol ...and there is nothing political about it (maybe that's what you see). If you need to take your protection, then you need to.
He spoke of both SPIRITUAL truths and advised in the PHYSICAL (the same Paul who healed the sick and raised the dead advised timothy to "take medicine for your ailments..."). Those who live by the sword are the ones he advised them to take a sword for! We've established that the bad guys are indeed out there...
The word also says NOT to argue over silly doctrines too. So please stop. It's christians who argue over every jot and tittle that give those who criticize christians plenty of ammunition (no pun intended). Walking in the spirit fixes that.

Mr. B, I also graduated from the School of Ministry with a degree in divinity, but the degree means very little if we don't know Him personally. Apostle Paul was the most educated of Pharisees and legalistic as they come (always leads to pride in our own righteousness), but counted it all as dung in comparison of being found in Him. Education is good, but it doesn't mean a thing if it it used to elevate a human being (or cause others to follow after one because of the education). I've always thought that knowledge without godly wisdom is just a bunch of words. :) I think people forget that the wierd dude from that church in westboro was an ordained minister. Obviously, anybody can get a degree but it doesn't keep them from being crazy or in error. Giving others grace is a God given gift. Correction should be done in private (according to the word), but when it is made public by well meaning people, sometimes you've got to do what you can to preserve God's reputation. lol

Very well said. During school, I was a young associate pastor in a large church. I believed I was doing God's work. Then I ran into the politics of big churches. The pastor's sermon on Sunday may have been direct from God but the business end was atrocious. I was disillusioned at first. But through prayer and meditation, God led me in a different direction. I went back to school and became a family law attorney and feel I have done more for God through that avenue than I could have in a church.

Mr. B.-Thanks for you testimony. To elaborate, what I meant by the Assisi comment, was that I appreciate that you saw your calling and followed it. So many in the church think they are called to preach or sing or something WITHIN the church but they're not called! Sometimes our greater calling is out there where we walk and talk every day. I know, because I tried the inside the church thing until God did something drastic to show me otherwise. I ended up in the public school system and got involved with troubled kids, built a rapport with them, and then later on began working in the jails where I met them again. Didn't have to build a relationship - it was already orchestrated by design. What if I had been stubborn and stayed in the church only? They wouldn't have gotten much because I would have been out of order. My pastor says that although we bring church services on sunday, the greater ministry is when we visit them on wed. and sat. That's when they see us taking time to just "be there". That speaks the gospel louder than any sermon they'll hear in church. Sometimes I just help with essays or math, or listen as they tell me about their family. One kid, he and I both love boxing and talked the whole time about our love for the sport. I love talking about their gifts and finding a career that fits. It gives them hope for after they get out. Jesus took the gospel to the simple and ordinary. He didn't wait for them to come to the Temple. He met them where they lived.

Where you been, anyway? I was enjoying the relative peace and quiet without your sniping at me. Let's call a truce - you leave me alone and bother someone else, and I won't reply to anything you write.

I assure you, I am not jealous of either Tammy's or Mr. B's "education". They have both shown themselves to write like know-it-alls, but they are not know-it-alls. As for them trying to help others, not happening. On their clear perspective - granted their perspective is very, very clear. But, I acknowledge, it is many hats they seem to wear :D That's my observant opinion, just as they have many times, like you, offered their opinions of me. Isn't turn-about fair play?

Also, to go back to the original question of "what if?" If she hadn't been armed, she would have wound up as a statistic, and we probably wouldn't have heard anything about it. Like the woman in fairburn, which I hadn't ward anything about until it got mentioned in this thread.

But it's also a good question, "What if there had been more than one intruder?" And "What if there had been more than one and a magazine capacity requirement had been in place?" Assuming she would have had a semi automatic, which is when it would have mattered. Answer to both of those questions is the same as above. She would have been a statistic....

Karsten, I think that's the variable that is left out of this - the statistics. people are murdered, it makes the front page for a day or two, then it's off into never-never land. Until something like this happens no one sees the REAL PEOPLE involved. it's easy to gloss over life and death when it isn't in your back yard. But it's important to have to look at it. That's why these forums can be a good thing. Can be - lol. As much as you have to put up with aimless side issues that distract, it's still good to get this out into the open. At least some who never gave it a minutes notice opens their eyes just a little, then it has been worth it.
Btw...thanks for the defense, you were spot on. I started to defend with details but thought, naaa. No point. I don't recall proclaiming anything. I referenced Paul because while he was spiritual, he also understood the ailments of the flesh. I even looked up some good commentary on the sword thing. In full context, there's a great explanation of destiny (putting the ear back on) and taking the sword (in Rome now, not the gentle streets they just got off of). I wish I could include the details, but don't have the time to scroll 31/2 miles through the thread. Trying to make the point that we live in the world but are not of it and most biblical thought includes both. Not sure what politics has to do with a testimony of God's greatness either. Oh well...I think I'll take my own advice and not get involved in aimless arguments. :)

Tammy, you should apologize to me, but I don't expect that.

What you said that cut so deeply was that I "shamed" my Lord.

I am a grandmother, a life-long Christian, and have experienced many types of people, but I have never had anyone say something so hateful, hurtful and wrong-spirited. Imagine someone saying that to you. See what I mean?

Given the harsh words and personal attacks you have written to and about me, you made the right decision to become a lawyer instead. Much more befitting of your "character". But, on the other hand, too bad you chose family law. Criminal defense seems more suitable.

Tammy, here's where you jumped from talking about Jesus: "I have a feeling the same Jesus who told the disciples to take their swords with them would understand perfectly."

to:"
He spoke of both SPIRITUAL truths and advised in the PHYSICAL (the same Paul who healed the sick and raised the dead advised timothy to "take medicine for your ailments..."). Those who live by the sword are the ones he advised them to take a sword for! "

Then you went back in the next evening to bring in a comment about Paul, after I questioned your mention of Paul when you were paraphrasing Jesus. That Paul comment actually was out of context. Even Mr. B didn't attack me on that point.

That's just for the record. I like to set all things straight, and that was bothering me because I felt you ambushed me, accusing me of arguing about the Word, when it was your comment which needed clarification and that had invited my question.

GGY-Since you invoked my name and accused me of being close minded (I didn't think you engaged in personal attacks), I feel some obligation to respond. I assume that's what you want. I re-read the entire exchange.

Tammy was telling a story from the Bible about Paul's miracles and you attempted to correct her stating the subject should be Jesus and not Paul. Tammy then verified the story. And she went further to explain that we all have the power, provided by the Holy Spirit, to do miracles ourselves. Just have Faith, true Faith, never questioning Faith. Almost impossible, I admit. Even though I have witnessed miracles personally, it's still difficult to release myself from the World and have that kind of Faith.

But your response, as usual when someone attempts to show you the light, was to attack Tammy and now go on and on trying to defend yourself and put yourself in a superior light. Personally, I don't care one way or the other. I encouraged you earlier to study the Word. Not knowing every story in the Bible isn't a crime. Even those of us that have studied it, been educated in it, and read it over and over miss things often. One of the things I find amazing about the Bible is that every time I read something, I find something new.

My final word on the subject. My final review of this thread. Let's talk about something else.

Mr. B, it was Tammy who confused the issue in her story. You know that. It's why you didn't jump on me when you made the very next comment. She was talking about Jesus, and mentioned Paul out of the blue. It was in need of clarification. It was she who pounced. Her self-defense mechanism set in, most likely. But I didn't deserve what she said to me. You can't re-read all the comments because they have been deleted (she admitted to editing hers, which seems disingenuous after the fact, instead of offering an explanation and apology). Too late to do a full, knowledgeable critique. It's obvious you and she don't feel I have a right to defend myself.

I rarely make personal attacks, but I am human and have human feelings. Some of you categorize observations as attacks, all the while attacking. Take a look at what you have said to and about me on various blog comments, and those of other like-minded participants. Take a good, honest look and tell me you guys don't come after me regularly with personal attacks; some of them are vicious, some even vulgar.

I have never had Tammy, with all her Christian convictions, come to my defense. She seems quite okay with the vulgarity and personal comments when they're directed at me. If you're not a part of the solution, you're part of the problem.

You and Tammy want this put to bed because you're not willing to admit your participation in what went wrong. I was deeply bothered by her comments and had every right to say it. I put it aside to enjoy the evening with my family and got this nastiness off my mind for a while. Today, I had a very cleared headed, less emotional assessment. I wasn't wrong, but I was wrongly attacked.

Of course, you want it to go away. You two should have thought of that earlier.

You took it to a side issue. i used to get on loganville online and the liquor by the drink thing came up. I said NOT ONE WORD. Jut a battle I chose not to enter. You'd be surprised at what I walk away from here. :) Just choose carefully what you say, especially if it is off the subject matter. If off the subject matter, it's considered throwing the first punch on PATCH. Several times I asked you to please stop but you kept going, and to top it off basically accused ME of being the last word freak - lol. Sometimes, walking away is best. Personally, I do wish that moderators would moderate the side stuff a little more. They used to with occasional reminders to stay on subject. Maybe we need to do that again.

All of this started when, 42 posts ago, I posted a reply to something I saw 132 posts back about a woman who made sure that her gun didn't get stolen because she always had it with her. GGy - actually, I had already gone back and edited that out before I read your demand for an apology. Once I saw that part, i truly did think that that was offensive. I'll be honest, I tried to walk away several times by saying STOP. But you guys kept coming (as if you and david live to correct and then put someone down) and then when you "corrected" me , then made a snide remark about "educated" (I tried to give a testimony to show that education is not what impresses God according to the word). I mean really, that's called "provoking" which is not a good fruit to possess. I tried to use actual scripture so that I wouldn't be 'accused" of interpreting wrong. That's not exalting anything. Just trying to simplify it.
I don't expect one from you as you seldom admit you can be wrong and will only defend yourself and then be more demanding. But once I reread that, I did feel that I should apologize for that particular remark. It really was uncalled for. The bible says to do all these things privately, not publically, and that was wrong.

Tammy, you should have done your editing before you posted it live. Too late, damage done once others can read it (even if you edit or delete, the posts show up in email notifications), especially the one person who felt it the most.

You see, there you go again with your characterizations - I didn't "demand" an apology. I did say you should apologize but that I didn't expect it. Can you ever see where your phrasing and your words create unnecessary controversy?

Actually, I didn't correct you, I questioned you - which you were prideful about, but could have answered in a reasonable way. That educated remark was my personal opinion on preachers. I think you took it personally, which was not intended. I have no idea why you thought I was talking about you. Are you an ordained preacher?

You should go back and inventory all of your sermonettes and other lessons. I do believe you have David and me beat, in both volume and quantity. He did teach me a new word - polemics. Interesting definition that word has.

That was a somewhat back-handed sort of explanation, filled with more judgment and accusations: "I don't expect one from you as you seldom admit you can be wrong and will only defend yourself and then be more demanding." I try not to be wrong in the first place, but I have admitted to not being an expert and have no aversion to apology. Continuing harsh posts are not conducive to an atmosphere of understanding or apology.

Tammy, I'm not sure what you mean by ". . . it would grieve me to know that I did it." Are you saying that I did "shame the body of Christ", as you judged me in your comment, or that you would feel what I did if someone said that to you?

There's no "if" about it. You did hurt me with those words. I told you that. Offering me a qualifying apology and turning this around on me isn't helping. If you can find it in your heart to do better, that would be appreciated. If not, I rest my case except to say this:

Whenever I have heard or read such unfortunate exchanges as the one on this thread, it makes me think that so many unbelievers, tender new Christians and Christians at a stage in which they doubt their faith because of circumstances are turned away from God by Christians . . . Christians whose testimony, words or hypocritical behavior/lifestyle turn unknown and uncounted souls away from, not toward, Jesus.

As Paul usually ended his letters, "The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all."

GGY - And who appointed you the Politically Correct Word Police? And why is it that you, supposedly, can be the only one offended.....and then demand an apology? And, yes, in your comment you demanded an apology. (There you go again - you say suggest, we hear demand. We say defend, you hear offend. Why is it you get to be the deciding factor in how or what is said and how it is interpreted?) At least others admit their faults, apologize (when or if necessary), and allow for differing opinions.

In referencing two of your posts/comments, I have to agree with you that some of the exchanges on this post have been 'unfortunate' especially to a 'non believer or someone questioning their faith'. Specifically your following exchange:

"Paul did that? Surely you meant to write Jesus healed the sick and raised the dead."

Please give me your biblical references since you replied to a post that listed actual scripture to back-up the point - or dispute the scripture that was given. Surely you're not saying Jesus is the only one who healed the sick and raised the dead.

I'm so sick of the idea that you become a victim when you've been offended. Then, you are sooooo offended that you demand an apology but then say 'well, your apology wasn't heartfelt enough so I'm still offended and I'm still a poor victim'. Get over it!!! Want something biblical??? God tells us we will be persecuted and that we should Rejoice and be glad when it happens. Matthew 5:10-12

@ The Dish - I don't know where you came from to add another attack on me, but welcome to the fray. Maybe you can teach some folks that if they dish it out, they should stand ready to take it. The original posts were deleted so you can only offer a partial evaluation. Did you see them before the editing? If you did and still defend them, you've got no gripe at me.

Nowhere did I make a demand - I said "should" get an apology and that I "didn't expect it". Tammy, though, orders me to "Take out your Bible." And you, demand that I "Get over it!"

You take a look at the comments made to me and honestly say I haven't been attacked by several in this thread alone. In fact, in nearly every thread following any blogs, these people come after me. There's quite the documented history on that fact. That makes one a victim. It makes the ones who say the hurtful, offensive things to me or anyone else, the perpetrator. They're in control of that situation.

I can take care of myself. But why are you coming to their defense? They are also capable of counterattacks. Why aren't you telling them to stop it and get over it?

I posed my question the way I did because the lady was talking about Jesus, not Paul. She realized that after she judged my faith and intent. Her apology wasn't heartfelt, it was "if I offended". A sincere apology isn't prefaced that way and doesn't then proceed to turn it back on the offended. What about turning the other cheek, being humble, "the meek shall inherit the earth"?

Christian arrogance and aggression is dangerous to the faith.

It's all very unpleasant and uncomfortable for readers. For me, it's personal. And, it is against the Patch terms of service to attack other posters. I didn't make those rules.
