Jones Resigns Superior Court Post

Judge Steve Jones leaves the Western Judicial Circuit in anticipation of taking the reigns as a federal judge in Georgia's U.S. Northern District.

In front of a crowd of supporters, Steve Jones officially tendered his resignation as Superior Court Judge in the Tenth District Western Judicial Circuit at 5 p.m. at on Wednesday.

The Jones' appointment as a U.S. District Judge for the Northern District of Georgia's Atlanta Division on Feb. 28.

Several Oconee County commissioners, and Clarke County Sheriff Ira Edwards Jr., were among other law enforcement officers, court officials and citizens that were there to wish Jones good luck.

"It's been great and an honor to serve the citizens of Oconee County," Jones said.

He said he was still unsure about when he will be sworn in as a federal judge.

Although he is looking at Atlanta area real estate, Jones said he plans to keep his 17-acre home in Athens-Clarke County.

Jones has served Oconee County and Athens-Clarke County in Superior Court since 1995.
