Oconee Coaches Face off - UPDATE: Who Will Take the Coveted Second?

We asked high school coaches from the cross-town rivals who would win ten upcoming bowl games. Who's the better prognosticator?

UPDATE--Monday, Jan. 10:

Well, the Panthers came in and sealed Coach Tuley's winning fate as they handled the Cats easily in the Compass Bowl Saturday night - Pitt 27, Kentucky 10.

For second place, it's all going down to the championship game tonight between the Ducks (12-0) and Tigers (13-0). Coach Youngblood picked those SEC War Eagles and Coach Olson liked the Quack Attack. Should Oregon win, Coach Olson pulls into second, in a final tie with Coach Youngblood.

Looks like Coach Tuley will have the sole bragging rights... As a coach friend of the editor says, "Second place is nothin' but the first place loser."

Headed in to the National Championship game tonight at 8 p.m. (ESPN), here are the current results:

Terry Tuley: 6-3

Michael Youngblood: 5-4

Mitch Olson: 4-5

Hal Wilson: 3-6

Good luck, Coaches!

UPDATE--Saturday morning, Jan. 8:

The tide could be turning! With a big SEC win last night, LSU took Texas A&M down, 41-24. And, Coach Tuley's lead went down. Coach Youngblood has now tied him and Coach Olson is not far behind.

Two more bowl games are left on our pigskin picks list. The next game is the Compass Bowl TONIGHT where the SEC battles again - Kentucky v. Pittsburgh.

This game will make a new sole leader of the group.

Good luck guys!

Here are the current results:

Terry Tuley: 5-3

Michael Youngblood: 5-3

Mitch Olson: 4-4

Hal Wilson: 2-6

UPDATE--Wednesday morning, Jan. 5:

With the Buckeyes pulling one out in last night's Sugar Bowl against the Razorbacks, Coach Tuley pulls out ahead with a sole-position lead in our coaches' pigskin pick 'em.

Here are the current results:

Terry Tuley: 5-2

Michael Youngblood: 4-3

Mitch Olson: 3-4

Hal Wilson: 2-5

The Next game is the Cotton Bowl

this Friday, Jan. 7 at 7 p.m. Coaches Tuley and Wilson have Texas A&M while coaches Olson and Youngblood are going with the SEC and LSU.

UPDATE--Saturday evening, Jan. 1:

As round three of bowl games ends tonight, we have an interesting outcome--a double tie.

Here are the current results:

Mitch Olson: 2-4

Michael Youngblood: 4-2

Terry Tuley: 4-2

Hal Wilson: 2-4

OCHS and NOHS are now tied but Coach Tuley is ahead of Coach Olson by two and Coach Youngblood is leading Coach Wilson by two.

The next bowl pick is the Allstate Sugar Bowl between the Ohio State Buckeyes and those SEC hogs at Arkansas. The game is Tuesday, Jan. 4 at 7:30 p.m. in the Louisiana Superdome.

Olson and Tuley picked the Buckeyes and Youngblood and Wilson went with the Razorbacks. These pigskin picks will break up the ties.

UPDATE--Saturday morning, Jan. 1:

We're done with day two of bowl games picks by our prognosticating coaches.

Here's where they stand:

Mitch Olson: 0-3

Terry Tuley: 1-2

Michael Youngblood: 1-2

Hal Wilson: 1-2

Sorry coaches, the old reliable SEC is just not having their usual strong showing at the bowls thus far.

Two of the three games today could really stir up the standings (all four coaches picked Miss St. to win).

Regardless of the outcome, it's going to be a great new year's day of college football. Enjoy!

Check back tonight for the next update.

UPDATE--Friday, Dec. 31:

Surprising results in the first round of picks:  the hoop coaches are both up one on the pigskin coaches!

Today's UGA game offers no change in the lead as all the guys picked the hometown favorite to bring the Liberty Bell to Athens.

Coach Tuley could shake things up should Osceola and the tribe pull one over the Old Ball Coach in Atlanta today.

THE COACHES HAVE THEIR SAY:

Oconee County football Coach Mitch Olson:

"I'll take UGA over Central Florida. Can't bet against the home team."

"South Carolina beats Florida State. I don't think Spurrier will disappoint."

"I gotta go with Ohio State. I mean, they're Ohio State."

"I'm gonna stick with the SEC and go LSU over Texas A&M."

"I gotta pick Kentucky. They want it."

"I'm picking Oregon here. An old student of mine, Eddie Pleasant, plays for the Ducks, and I'm a loyal guy."

North Oconee football Coach Terry Tuley:

Music City Bowl -"A hard fought game but the Vols young players are better than North Carolina's replacements.

Liberty Bowl -"Georgia cannot afford to lose."

Chik-fil-a Bowl -"It'll be tough for Spurrier to get the troops to play after returning to the scene of their demise in the SEC championship."

Outback Bowl - "The Gators will win one for the Gipper."

Capital One - "The Crimson Tide has too much talent that has not had the successes expected and will put a Saban stamp on this victory."

Gator Bowl -"One team is fighting for their coaches life and one team is fighting to continue establishing credibility for their program, maybe one of the toughest games to call. State by a field goal."

Sugar Bowl—Ohio State "The Razorbacks need to throw to be successful and Ohio State will play better defense."

Cotton Bowl—Texas A&M "The Bengal Tiger Luck can't last forever."

Compass Bowl - "Joker gets trumped by a wounded panther. Wanstedt's absence makes the players try to prove something for their coach, team, and conference."

National Championship - "Title and trophy have found a home in the deep south. Oregon can match Auburn with speed but no one has had an answer for Cam and the Tiger offense. Bound to be an interesting and exciting game, but in the end Ted Roof will find a way to get the blitzes home and Auburn wins by 12."

North Oconee boys basketball Coach Hal Wilson:

Music City Bowl - "A tough one to pick. I grew up a Carolina fan, but coached at UT."

Liberty Bowl - "Can't pick against the home team."

Chik-fil-a Bowl - "Darth Visor gets it done."

Outback Bowl - "Joe Pa could've retired 40 years ago too, but he stuck around for this."

Capital One Bowl - "Sparty has more to prove."

Gator Bowl - "The Bulldogs tie their shoes."

Sugar Bowl - "Ohio State might score. Woo pig sooie."

Cotton Bowl - "Mad hatter decides to punt on 1st downs."

Compass Bowl - "Pitt  & UK tie 0-0 after 13 overtimes and decide to play hoops to break the tie.  Pitt wins on a free throw."

National Championship - "Quack attack wears prototype invisible uni's."

THE VERDICT?

There is one obvious trend: each coach picked nearby University of Georgia Bulldogs to win out over Central Florida in the Liberty Bowl, but outside of local loyalty, the coaches go their own way.

Let the games begin and may the best coach win!
