Do You Believe Paul Ryan is Qualified to Be President?

A vice president is said to be just a heartbeat away from the presidency. So if a Romney/Ryan ticket were to win the White House in November, would Paul Ryan be qualified to step up if the need arose?

We're now on the last day of the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla., and the final stretch of Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan's campaign for the White House. Wednesday, we got to hear Ryan's speech. It was designed to show us just who he is and why he is qualified to be vice president. But the bigger question is, should the need arise, is he qualified to be president?

In the 2008 election, one of the arguments by those who didn't vote for John McCain was that they didn't believe his vice president pick, Sarah Palin, was qualified. And now, some of those who are critical of the current administration question what would happen should Vice President Joe Biden ever be given the reigns at the White House.

So our question on this last day of the RNC is, if a Romney/Ryan ticket is successful, is Paul Ryan qualified to take over as president should the need ever arise?

Please tell me this is a rhetorical question. After witnessing Mr. Hope and Change impose his abuse on America, I believe my poodle is qualified.
As for Ryan, I would rather have he than Biden.

Could I ask that if you are going to post question like this, where you ask for an opinion, you also ask folks to back it up with facts as to why they do or don't think they are qualified? The problem is that some folks just believe so passionately that one side is wrong that their knee jerk reaction is "Of course not", or "The Whole Situation is a Joke". Well, if it is a joke, I am not laughing. I can give you a tremendous amount of information why this current President needs to be replaced, and never once make it personal.

In terms of Romney/Ryan, the race to see who will get the Republican nod is over, and we all might have wanted our guy there, and maybe he isn't, but Romney is who we have, and we need to decide if we are going to support him, or if we are going to do another 4 years with this current administration. Again, leave emotion out, just use the facts, and use your head, and stop voting for singular issues, especially social issues. Every side uses Social Issues to rally votes, but this has to stop. We are a country that is at deaths door fiscally. We can't go around trying to right every social injustice using someone elses money.

So, with Romney/Ryan, I feel more energized than I did in the last election. I do not think either is a saint, the messiah, or perfect. I do think that difficult times bring out the best or the worst in people. I think this challenge will bring out their best.

Todd has a good point here, the partisanship in the country will never change if we don't listen to facts, weigh them up and then decide. Rhetoric doesn't help. Lets have a conversation based on the whole picture, not just talking points from either side that we've had drummed into us. None of us agree 100 percent with either party, but we have people trying to convince us we do. I know the basis behind the two-party system, and I understand and believe in it, but I can't help but think it is also that two-party system that is largely responsible for the huge divide we have in America at the moment.

Sharon, the problem is that conservatives will no longer listen to facts. Even when you cite credible sources like the CBO or the GAO they refuse to believe anything other than the Fox News/GOP Party line. And make no mistake, they will believe anything that apparatus tells them. They have been convinced that there is some great liberal conspiracy controlling all other forms of information. That degree of thought control is alarming.

Brian, I agree with part of what you say here but Rs and Ds both tend to believe what their preferred sources tell them and skeptical of others. For example, I have a problem with the CBO due to errors. I understand that they are not supposed to be biased but they release reports based on the information they receive. Well, if that information (i.e. initial cost of Obamacare) is wrong, then we get bogus info. That makes them no more reputable that Geraldo. Well... maybe more than Geraldo but he's nutty. We should all be more open minded to facts. It's difficult when NBC and FOX either completely edits a sound bite or only plays specific pieces.

Well, Ryan hasn't been a community organizer and he didn't start his political career with a known terrorist. He hasn't spent 20 years in a church with a racist pastor that shouts "God Damn America." Therefore, yes, he is qualified. In fact, I'd be just as happy with him leading the ticket.

He is not qualified and he has stared to tell the big lies.
If you've seen any coverage of Paul Ryan's speech in Tampa, you know that the consensus among journalists and independent observers is that it was ... factually challenged.
He lied about Medicare. He lied about the Recovery Act. He lied about the deficit and debt. He even dishonestly attacked Barack Obama for the closing of a GM plant in his hometown of Janesville, Wisconsin -- a plant that closed in December 2008 under George W. Bush. He also failed to offer one constructive idea about what he would do to move the country forward.
He leveled false attack after false attack against the President, while neglecting to give a single idea for how to move our country forward.
He also didn't mention that the Romney-Ryan plan would turn Medicare into a voucher program to pay for tax cuts for millionaires, or that their promise to repeal Obamacare would take away access to health care for 32 million Americans. And don't even get me started on how they want to end a woman's right to make her own health care decisions.

George, those are pretty big accusations. Do you want to roll them back before people start to show your wrong? Maybe the problem is that you are listening to the MSM, not doing your own research, or did you just not listen to the speech, and got your understanding of it from your MSM of choice? I'll give you one example from your post above. The GM plant. Where in his speech did he blame Obama for the closing of the GM plant? Be specific now...how about use his actual words? Well here they are:
"President Barack Obama came to office during an economic crisis, as he has reminded us a time or two. Those were very tough days, and any fair measure of his record has to take that into account. My home state voted for President Obama. When he talked about change, many people liked the sound of it, especially in Janesville, where we were about to lose a major factory.
A lot of guys I went to high school with worked at that GM plant. Right there at that plant, candidate Obama said: “I believe that if our government is there to support you … this plant will be here for another hundred years.” That’s what he said in 2008.
Well, as it turned out, that plant didn’t last another year. It is locked up and empty to this day. And that’s how it is in so many towns today, where the recovery that was promised is nowhere in sight"

The plant WAS NOT closed in 2008. It was in 2009. He is calling out "O" for saying that he could help keep it open.

That’s the promise that Barack Obama failed to deliver — even when the government took ownership of GM. Ryan had it exactly right, and the fact checkers have made a mockery of their own profession by stepping all over their own biases to refute Ryan.

GM plant to close this week

JANESVILLE — As first announced in February, production at the General Motors plant in Janesville will end this week, a GM official said.

GM spokesman Christopher Lee confirmed operations at the southern Wisconsin plant will cease Thursday.

About 1,200 employees were let go just before Christmas when GM ended SUV production at the plant. Some 100 workers were retained to finish an order of small- to medium-duty trucks for Isuzu Motors.

Lee said most of those workers will be laid off Thursday. He said others will be kept on to help with the plant’s shutdown.

GM’s long-term future remains in doubt. Chief Executive Fritz Henderson said the automaker may file for bankruptcy if it can’t meet the strict requirements that came with $13.4 billion in government loans.

Rebecca. Note, this is an "Opinion" piece. Much like you and I have an opinion, you should not instantly install it as "fact" in your internal software. Read the speech. Read the part about GM that the Media is jumping on. He in no way blames Obama for closing the plant. He points out that Obama did not make good on his promises to keep the plant open. The fact is that the plant had not closed by the time O took office. Ryan was not saying that it closed because of O, he is saying that O's promises have been a bunch of hot air. The world loves snippits and sound bytes. The problem with that is CONTEXT. Read the speech, then research each issue you have a problem with. He didn't lie about Medicare either. His plan that has been public for some time does indeed use some savings to extend medicare for more years, until we can fix it, however Obama's cuts to Medicare go to fund Obamacare. It is like counting money twice. O says it is "savings", but then uses the money to fund another entitlement program! At least Ryan uses his savings to reduce the deficit. I know..reducing the deficit..horrible..shocking...gasp! We have hard choices to make. We can either continue to let our country fund entitlement and broken social programs, or we can begin to shrink the size of government. The writing is clearly on the wall. None of us should say, "I'm shocked the United States is going through this", we have countless examples of unbridled spending bankrupting countries

Seems to me that this is a bit of a planned attack on Ryan. Want further proof? Print off the articles, read each one side by side. Notice a lot of simular wording, paragraphs, statements? George, It is nice to hear your opinions on such issues heard from the liberal and independent media. Remember to use facts. Journalists have their agenda to follow. It is easy to believe what you hear from people who appear nice enough. That is what and how we have the president we have now. We, as a country, are being lead by the nose, litterally to believe what an authority figure says is true. We perform due diligence. Our current president has put in 4 years and for the most part has become quite the golfer and has a pretty good knack for the NCAA bracket. He looks cool when he jogs off AirForce One and frankly talks out of the side of his mouth and really doesn't look you in the eye when he gives his speeches. If you have ever watched the show Lie to Me it `demonstrates traits of a liar. A liar will avoid eye contact, make jokes about others to get the focus off themselves, they will fidget and blame others. By the way, five year olds try this too. When our current president speaks off the record he makes sense. President Clinton was on the left until he realized he wanted to have more time and get re-elected. He, intelligently began to swing to the middle and decided to work together for the better of all. Thanks for sharing. Page

I heard that Ryan lied about the closing of the GM plant; then I went and listened to his actual statement on CSPAN.com video. The folks that accused him of lying were the ones telling the lies. CSPAN just gives the raw video without telling you what to think. Some folks would not have anything to talk about if their favorite news outlet didn't tell them what to think, though. Most of the convention speeches are there. You would be surprised at how much was edited by your favorite news channel. I enjoyed watching the convention without the "talking heads" telling me what I was supposed to think.

Did Ryan lie about Medicare? If so, Obama told the same lie on ABC news in this interview: Obama said on ABC News that he cut medicare by more than 700 billion to pay for the Healthcare bill http://youtu.be/t5Ha7RNpn24 . You should not invent a clever double entry accounting method to try to make the cut disappear after making it, should you?

In your opinion the cuts to providers/doctors may have "benefited the program," but it did not benefit the average American retired person who moves to a new community and tries to find a doctor who accepts new medicare patients. If your doctor retires and you are on Medicare, you are screwed when you try to find a new doctor who accepts new medicare patients.

When you cut payments to medicare doctors, they quit accepting new patients. Period.

Sure it helps balance the books of the system, but how does that help us if we have no doctor to see for the marvelous new system?

I don't know if it can be said better than this qoute from a popular blogger. I find it humorous the amount of "FACT" checking that has hit the news wire after Ryan's speech, but the media turns blind eye after blind eye to every single speech that Obama has given over his entire existence. Lets do a side by side comparison shall we? Then and only then will I take the politifact, NBC, ABC, Left wing MSM's seriously in their "examination" of Paul Ryan's facts. If you care to know the truth, it just takes a few seconds to read the speech, and do your own homework. Here is the qoute:
"By the way, do I get to point out what horse shiitake mushrooms it is that the media is declaring Paul Ryan’s speech full of half-truths when they rarely do that to Barack Obama’s campaign speeches? Seriously, this was a campaign speech of big ideas and the media would denigrate it by screaming that Paul Ryan left out key details when, in fact, they weren’t really relevant to the big ideas or themes and some just weren’t added because of time. Meanwhile, Barack Obama claims Obamacare will solve our national debt problems and the media goes blind in the bathroom to his flat out lies."

Every industrialized country in the world has some kind of national healthcare. We have made a start with the Affordable Health Care Act .Can it be improved upon ...YES. Should it be repealed NO. Why want Republicans talk about our bloated and wasteful defense budget as a way to get spending under control? Why want Republicans talk about "corporate welfare: Special tax breaks and subsidies for big corporations? Addressing these two issues would generate solutions to the budget problems.

@George. Regarding your "Every Industrialized Nation" comment. First, what does that have to do with Obamacare? I love the way people color those of us against Obamacare as being against a system that helps those who need healthcare. The Affordable Health Care Act did nothing to make Healthcare more affordable. Like any other plan hatched by the government it is called something it is not...so people can say "How could you be against affordable healthcare for all"? Those who don't want to think on their own, who don't want to fight the fight to get what America deserves (something we can afford, something that doesn't steal from others, something that doesn't bankrupt America, something that doesn't make my healthcare less effective, etc) are always willing to jump in line behind a person who says "I have an idea that is going to save us all". Have you read the bill? Do you know anything about what drives the cost of Healthcare? Do you know about the shortages of physicians that already exist? Do you know how they are collecting money for many more years just to fund a few years of Obamacare? They lace the bill with a few things that everyone likes just to keep the 95% of the horrific bill from getting cancelled, so they can go to the few people and say "They want to take your healthcare away". We can do better. We can cover preexisting conditions, etc in a much better way without all of the Government power grabbing and bankrupcy this will cause.

@George: You said, "Why want Republicans talk about "corporate welfare: Special tax breaks and subsidies for big corporations? ". First, let me explain something. 50% of Americans pay NO taxes. If the Left want "fairness", how about we start closing that loophole first, and make everyone pay something? Second, The Govt has you tricked into thinking that they are giving their money to a company. What they often call Handouts are really just letting the company keep more of THEIR OWN MONEY. It really comes down to a simple belief, that the individual can better invest their own money vs. letting the government decide where we should invest. It is a proven fact that by cutting corporate taxes it allows companies to reinvest in themselves, and create new jobs. By helping the top, you help the bottom too. If this isn't true, then why hasn't the helping the bottom up that Obama has been doing these past 4 years caused unprecidented growth? Tax cuts increase tax revenue. Lastly, Do you really think that Republicans have the corner on subsidy to business? Forget about the fact that the current administration gives out money left and right to people who pay no taxes, but lets look at his own record of giving to corporations shall we? Among his handouts are $1.2 million for the United Nations to promote clean fuels, $718,000 to help China comply with two initiatives and $700,000 for Thailand to recover methane gas at pig farms.

This administration alone has given over $100M in foreign grants to battle pollution. These are grants to foreign countries aimed at reducing global pollution.

In terms of handouts..how about the massive handouts and vouchers he has given to his "friends" so they do not need to worry about the most expensive provisions of his healthcare bill? You don't seem to have a problem with that greasing? Or how about this statement from Obama back in 2010: "The true engine of economic growth will always be companies like Solyndra," That was back when he was proud of giving $500 million to Solyndra in taxpayer-funded HAND OUTS! Now where is Solyndra today? Hmmm...lets see...Bankrupt?! So all he has done is take money from Coal, Oil, etc and give it to the companies he supports in his effort to remake the world and fly in the face of individual choice by forcing money to the people HE wants to succeed.

Here is the article from 2008. Notice this specific sentence: "GM will close the plant by 2010 as it changes its focus from larger vehicles to more fuel-efficient ones.". Now reference that with what Ryan said. He is merely pointing out that the Presidents policies, or handling of GM did not keep the doors open. He in no way said that Obama was responsible for the closing. Again, read the actual speech, not the MSM reports. His point goes on to say that many of those laid off from that plant still have yet to find work, and why would something that has not worked for 4 years turn a different result for 4 more years? It is a question of what Obama plans to do? He has said nothing new, and keeps buckling down on his policies that are "working", so we are left to judge him based on if they have worked since he is suggesting nothing new, or admitting any miscalculation. I've found no verification from GM's public relations department, but as said here already, don't they work for the current administration? Where do you think Obama is getting his money from? Where did he get it from in the last election? Better yet, how did he use it? ACORN? You speak as though there is something wrong with free people giving money to whatever cause they support. If our view for the future of America tells us to give money to Romney, what is wrong with that? Like Obama said on the stump yesterday..."They should be contributing that to a scholarship fund to send kids to college. But instead, they are going to spend more money than we've ever seen..." How dare he tell Americans where they should give money, or even think to accuse that they do not already give money to such scholarships. I don't recall him telling Hollywood types "Hey, don't give your money to me..fund a scholarship instead". Americans know that you can have a college degree, but without jobs to find after your graduate, what is the purpose? They are giving their money to the only hope they have.

This is from the Janesville Gazette, but I suppose the folks in the town where the plant is actually located didn't really know what was occurring in town, did they?

All people pay tax including the bottom 50%.They pay high regressive sales taxes and payroll taxes at a minimum. Many also pay property taxes and numerous FEES that conservatives put in order to not raise taxes. My guess is that this argument has been put forth by right wingers trying to defuse the issue of taxes in those making over $250,000 per year and especially the top 1%

@George I promise that I am not trying to be cruel, but you should really stop posting. Your arguments are the written version of "Look a Squirrel". Are you just trying to set me up to show that I have read, and you are guessing? Your statement above is full of fodder. No facts, lots of acusing, and stating of your version of the facts without any support. You are a perfect example of an emotional thinker. You hold on to your "view" even when the facts simply do not support it. Thus the lack of facts in your posts. I do agree with one thing you say..EVERYONE pays income taxes, BUT some people get more back than they put in. Answer me this..If you give the cashier $1 for a soda, and she gives you $1.25 back, did you just pay $1 for that soda? No, she just paid you 25 cents! Thats what is happening in our income tax structure. No, this is not a right winger statement, this was put out by the congressional institute on taxation and economic policy. It is fact, that 51% of Americans get back more than they pay in. This is social fairness run amuck. Do you realize that the top 20% of Americans are those making more than $90,000. Is that rich to you? Do you realize that the top 25% (those making more than $60,000) pay 87% of income taxes? The top 5% (making over $150,000) pay 58% of all income taxes. The people you call rich pay the same fees and property taxes that others pay, but often more because where they live is considered higher tax value.

Easy question posed in this article. Is Ryan a natural born citizen of the United States? Is he at least thirty-five years old? Has Ryan been a resident of the United States for at least fourteen years? If so, he is qualified. Read the Constitution. I know most of our representatives in Congress could locate a copy of the Constitution, much less have read any of it.

Everyone talk about how the rich should pay more in taxes. Question - when has a poor person ever hired you to work full time ??
Also the poor pay NOTHING in taxes and get money back. Odd system we have.

Yeah, I know of a woman who worked for one full year (wow!) and made 15K and then filed her tax returns and was able to get back 6K. Now mind you, she is on food stamps, lives in section 8 housing and is on welfare. So what little she did put in to possibly help offset what she gets for "free" from the Government was given right back to her. Neat trick. She by the way still doesn't work. Why should she?

But did the poor person hire them or was it due to a program where government paid the person - I.e - care worker for children, elderly etc... This person was not paid out of her own pocket!!!

Again - has anyone every been hired by a poor person full time making 50k a year?

I could be considered one of the 50% that does not pay “taxes.” I am a retired person living on Social Security and two small pensions. This is why I do not pay taxes: the first $25,000 from my yearly income is not taxable (the IRS has a formula to determine if any SS is taxable). The first two years I was retired I did not pay federal and state taxes because my taxable income was not over $25,000. Each state has their own rules if SS and/or pensions are taxable and how much. Now that I’m at an age where I will start taking money out of my IRA, I will pay some federal taxes depending on the amount drawn from my IRA and deductions that I can take when I fill out my federal tax return. At this time even my some of my SS will be taxed. Even if I never have to pay any additional federal or state taxes, I still will be paying taxes. I pay state, county, and city taxes on my home; every time I buy items such as clothes, food, gas for my car, pay my utility bills, phone bills, I pay either 6% tax (2% tax on food). I do not think it's an accurate statement to say 50% of the people do not pay taxes.

Also, I pay each month $99.90 for Medicare, $164.92 for my medigap policy, and $30.90 for my prescription policy for a total of $295.72 (it's not cheap being old). I’ve paid SS taxes since I was 16 years old.

@Anne, Thanks for the reply. I want to make sure that I address what you are saying. No, you are not considered as one of the 51% of Americans not paying taxes. The figures used to determine tax liability, and who is paying what, did not include elderly or retired, or those on social security. It only takes into account anyone working and earning a taxable income through work, not those retired or on Social Security. I have elderly parents who live check to check, and spend a ton on their medicines, etc. I have absolutely no problem with my tax money being spent on helping out the elderly, especially those who worked hard, but now can barely afford to live.

Again, I understand your statement, and respect why you are emotional about it. Please understand that my statement was specifically about INCOME TAXES, not sales tax, property tax, fees, etc. Also understand that what I shared from the Joint Committee on Taxation was a non-partisan report, that simply shared who is paying what. It does not factor the elderly into that equation, so when I say 51% pays no taxes, that is excluding the elderly, retired, or those living on Social Security.

Second, google "Ryan Speech" and look at the hundreds of articles that come up, all published within minutes of each other, all saying exactly the same thing, almost word for word. What you see as him being "torn up", I see as the Obama Political Machine cashing in their chips with the Liberal Media to shout "LIAR" as loud as they can, as many times as they can, so nobody will actually pay attention to what Ryan said. The reason is because Ryan's statement was damaging. What does Obama have to run on? His record? Then why not run on it? That is EXACTLY what Ryan was saying last night, "Look at his record"..judge him on his record. Did government create jobs? Did it help anyone laid off at this GM plant get jobs? It is exactly what the left does when arguing. They can't win on the facts, so they call you names, call you a liar, try to distract you from the actual point, etc. If you are serious about vetting this president, or any contender, you would take the time to read it, and see, there is no lie being told. You guys keep posting what the media is saying, and I have been posting retorts with actual facts all day...but you keep ignoring it, because it is convenient to your philosophy. Sad really....

I would like to commend Todd M for attempting to educate Mr. Wilson. Unfortunately, Mr. Wilson and many who share his way of thinking are not interested in actual truth or real solutions. All this talk about when a GM plant actually closed. As has been pointed out that was only used to provide an example of what has been done all over the country and the reason that particular location was used is that it happenned to be where Obama gave a speech implying he could save it. If not that example, then the left and MSM will look for one other sentence they can distort. How about addressing the message. Who could watch Ryan's speech last night and not see what a decent man this is. Liberals have nothing to throw at Romney/Ryan. These guys are not evil, or stupid, or any of the other cliche's that get hailed at the Right. This ticket is made up of two upstanding citizens who are faithful to God and have terrific families. One wildly successful in private business (A good thing!) and the other very skilled in the public arena. Are they qualified? Yes! Was Obama, having served very little time in the US Senate and having no private sector experience prior to that...well we all know how his policies have worked out so far. I for one am terrified to think that half of this country would even consider keeping the current Regime in place. God help us if the American electorate doesn't wake up!

@George.
1) Just because you write it here George, doesn't mean that this is a fact. Can you specifically site this statement in anything put out by Romney or Ryan? If you can, then we can all see this in context..something that you seem to not want to allow us to use given your other arguments here. Second, are you against closing loop holes, regardless of the reason?

2) This is the second time you have asked this about "corporate welfare and wasteful defense budget". I answered it once already. Didn't you notice? First, Defense spending is a legitimate purpose of government, in fact it is one of the few legitimate purposes of the federal government. I am all for cutting waste though..as are most Americans. In terms of Corporate Welfare, please scroll up to my post above, and how it discusses how Obama's EPA has given millions to foreign countries for clean air campaigns there. Or how Obama gave $500 Million to Solyndra, which is now bankrupt. Obama is trying to crush the business he doesn't like, and give our tax money to the ones HE wants to succeed. He knows nothing about free market principles, and thus Solyndra is bankrupt..the Chevy Volt...DOA.

3) Simpson Bowles? Do you even try to answer these on your own? He voted against it for what it was MISSING. Not that he didn't like some of it. Specifically how it took away from CURRENT SENIORS instead of protecting them.

@George...this is starting not to be fun. Read this slowly. In order to be called a liar you have to actually SAY what people are accusing you of saying. Please paste the exact thing that Ryan said and why it is a lie. You keep saying he said the plant closed under Obamas watch, or that the plant closing was Obamas fault. I am simply asking you WHERE did he say that? Pretty simple right? You can't because he didn't. Now listen..what he did say during the entire speech was that people bought into Obamas hope and change, and how his presidency would achieve this utopia, with shuttered factories opening and new jobs being created...but in fact none of that happened. He points out that many of those folks from the plant are still looking for work today. He is calling Obama out on all of his big talk and asking him to run on his RECORD not platitudes and monologues. Simply...WHERE are the jobs.

So how can a person lie when he never even said what you are accusing him of saying? In the same paragraph he actually says that one must consider the difficult times Obama walked into when evaluating his performance. How much more considerate and fair can you get?

Todd M

Here is what Obama said on said day in Janesville: "But through hard times and good, great challenge and great change, the promise of Janesville has been the promise of America – that our prosperity can and must be the tide that lifts every boat; that we rise or fall as one nation; that our economy is strongest when our middle-class grows and opportunity is spread as widely as possible.  And when it’s not – when opportunity is uneven or unequal – it is our responsibility to restore balance, and fairness, and keep that promise alive for the next generation.  That is the responsibility we face right now, and that is the responsibility I intend to meet as President of the United States. …

Those are the steps we can take to ease the cost crisis facing working families.  But we still need to make sure that families are working.  We need to maintain our competitive edge in a global by ensuring that plants like this one stay open for another hundred years, and shuttered factories re-open as new industries that promise new jobs.  And we need to put more Americans to work doing jobs that need to be done right here in America."

Comment_arrow

Todd M

12:01 am on Friday, August 31, 2012

And he also said this later, after the speech in Janesville : "“Reports that the GM plant I visited in Janesville may shut down sooner than expected are a painful reminder of the tough economic times facing working families across this country. This news is also a reminder that Washington needs to finally live up to its promise to help our automakers compete in our global economy. As president, I will lead an effort to retool plants like the GM facility in Janesville so we can build the fuel-efficient cars of tomorrow and create good-paying jobs in Wisconsin and all across America"

How much more clear can you get? Ryan is specifically asking the President, "what about that big talk mr president..? Remember when you said as prez you would LEAD the effort to retool plants like Janesville? What happened with that Mr prez? Isn't Ryan and every American justified in asking President Obama to answer to his record and stop promising more things when those he promised before didn't come to pass?

Comment_arrow

Todd M

12:20 am on Friday, August 31, 2012

And once again...HERE is what Ryan said last night in full context. NOTICE the emphasis is not on the plant closing, but on the empty promises made to those men and women, that if they voted for him, he would lead the charge to reopen, retool, or create jobs.

And that’s how it is in so many towns today, where the recovery that was promised is nowhere in sight."

Comment_arrow

Brian Crawford

10:02 am on Friday, August 31, 2012

Coupla things Todd. When Obama spoke at Janesville in 2008, GM was on the verge of an unmanaged bankruptcy. In fact the entire US auto industry was in serious trouble. Characterizing his remarks there as a promise is disingenuous. While the Janesville plant was eventually shuttered, Obama's policies helped save thousands of other US auto worker jobs. Ryan actually deserves credit for supporting and voting for the auto bailout.

The other problem is Ryan keeps changing his story. Earlier this month he blamed the Janesville closing on Obama's energy policies, saying this at a speech in Ohio:

"You know, I live in Janesville, Wisconsin. We used to have a big General Motors plant. A lot of my high school buddies worked at that plant. That plant was shut down in 2009. I remember President Obama visiting it when he was first running, saying he'll keep that plant open. One more broken promise."

"We used to build Tahoes and Suburbans. One of the reasons that plant got shut down was $4 gasoline. You see, this costs jobs. The president's terrible energy policies are costing us jobs." http://www.nationalreview.com/planet-gore/314545/janesville-ryan-vs-obama-henry-payne

While it's probably true $4 gas had something to do with the Janesville closing, since the plant quit producing SUVs in 2008 that $4 gas would have been due to Bush's energy policy, not Obama's (gas peaked a $4.15 a gallon in July 2008)

The Republicans are having trouble with Hispanics,African Americans and Women.
Their well known political strategy is to if not win these groups is to at least "'increase market share".One tactic is to push members of these groups forward as they did Wednestday night. For example, the first hispanic woman to be Governor of a state ...New Mexico spoke ,etc. It also gives the false illusion of being inclusive which they are not. Also remember the bulk of the party is now made up of old DixieCrats (DixieRepubs) hence the continuation of the southern strategy started under Nixon. The definition of tokenism: "The policy of attempting to meet certain obligations or conditions by symbolic or token efforts."The convention Wednesday night played to three groups to increase their market share. Its cynical ,especially since Republican Governors are enacting voter Id laws to keep minorities from voting, attacking womens reproductive freedom, and opposing Obama's immigration policies.

Do we want Lazy Uneducated Dependent Americans? We must see through all the hoops and know that we have to instill working hard, being diligent, struggle, do without, sacrifice, failing, winning, success are all American ways of living in this country. Because a business has to close and people lose jobs, does not mean the owner is to blame. Look at the what a business owner has to pay for to keep payroll flowing, medical benefits applicable and keep up postive morale. If the business does not bring in money to pay for these things, then it has to close. The owner may come out with some money as they should. In a lot of businesses, the owner has come out worse than before. Quit blaming businesses failures and successes. Go get a job. Get off your butt and go to work. Pop popcorn for a living until your dream job comes available again.

And you do realize that after he created a bi-partisan jobs commission that he's failed to meet with them even once, yet played golf plenty of times since. Keep whistling past the graveyard I guess and cast that vote for Obama b/c you think Ryan lies.

@Rebecca McCarthy
Some Republicans just make up lies and then keep repeating them over and over until many people start to believe them. For example ,Ronald Reagan was a great president who walked on water.

Good morning. As a casual obsever of Patch I enjoy reading the spirited debates moreso than participating. This particular thread has been an excellent representation of what is occurring all over our once-great nation. We have so many issues and agendas polarized one against another coming to a head on this one presidential election. I have but one stone to cast. It is a challenge to all. Regardless of the outcome 66 days from now, the result will be the majority voice of America's citizenry speaking up. Stand behind what "we the people" have to say- unify as that one voice, sing in unison to make the future of this once-great republic a step ahead of past glory.

Johnny, I am voting for President Obama. But, should Governor Romney win, I will pray for him, respect him, and honor him as our new President. That's what the Bible and my sense of patriotism command me to do.

I just want whoever gets in to realize how important reaching across the aisle is. I think it's time "we the people" were no longer so divided. We obviously are never going to be 100 percent in lockstep, but seeing someone simply with a different opinion as the enemy is very destructive.

I think that would be great. It has certainly worked in the past. You're right though, it does no good when Obama (The President) refers to Americans as enemies.

Obama reached across the aisle, repeatedly. The pubs refused to reach back. It took him a while to figure out that they had no intention of compromising. He finally realized he was going to have to go it alone. That's where we are today. You want to change that? Start with the Republican Congress.

Tammy Osier

Sharon, what I got out of the Republican convention was that it was NOT about Mitt Romney. It was about more of an "US" rather than an "I". I feel that the democratic party is all about ONE MAN! Obama has me, myself and I down to an art.
Romney seems to be the kind of person, and especially his background as a governor, that shows that he does reach across the aisle (actually has). That's more experience than Obama had when he came into office. I like what Clint Eastwood said-he said that obama isn't a bad man, just a bad president. He didn't have enough experience, and his solution is throw money around like it belongs to someone else and hang the consequences since they won't come to roost any time soon. Obama could have done what clinton did-reach across the aisle and move to the middle. But he won't because it's his way or no way. It may cost him in November. That's my opinion anyway.

Without stating what's wrong with the Republican candidates, I'm just curious to know what it is about Obama that those who say they will vote for him attribute it to. What is it you like about his leadership the last 4 years? Maybe I'm missing something.

CC, if you're missing something, you aren't the only one. Until I starting reading the patch blogs, I assumed all the Obama supporters were Amish and had little access to the real world.
(Disclaimer) - It's just a joke. I apologize in advance if anyone is hurt.
Now I realize that there are just a lot of really stupid voters with blinders on.

President Obama 's commitment to American woman and their families:
1.Equal Pay for Equal Work...signed into law the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act
2.Improved Women's health...Starting in 2012,new health insurance plans will be required to cover women's preventative services such as mammograms, domestic violence screenings and contraception without charge
3.Protecting women's right to choose
Job Creation:
1.Saved the auto industry from collapse preventing the loss of more than 1.4 million jobs
2.An economic recovery program supported as many as 3.6 million jobs by cutting taxes, investing in clean energy, roads, and bridges, keeping teachers in classrooms, and protecting unemployment benefits.
3. The private sector has created 3 million jobs during 21 straight months of private sector growth.
He has been held by form doing more by a do nothing Republican congress. For example they could pass"The American Jobs Act which would put more people back to work.
Ending the war in Iraq and honoring our veterans by enacting new tax credits to encourage businesses to hire unemployed and disabled veterans.Refocusing on Al-Qaeda and bringing Osama Bin Laden to justice.
Trying to create an economy built to last. Focus on education, wall street reforms etc.
The biggest item was the Affordable Health Care Act
1.Keeping premiums low
2.Ending insurance company abuse
3.Expanding access to care
4.Closing the Medicare prescription Drug "Donut Hole"

At every step of the way the Republican congress had tried to derail Obama's efforts.Thet stated early on that the strategy was to make Obama a one term president.Even our Gov,annouced last week that he was refusing to put 650,000 georgians on Medicaid even through it would be 100% paid for by the federal government.Over 850 georgians die each year from a lack of health insurance. You can draw your own conclusions but i think it is outrageous and criminal.

George:
To your point about Equal Pay for Equal Work; as a woman steadily employed in the work force for 30 years, I will tell you this is lip service pandering to women by Obama. To point 2, I hope they take away your Viagra to pay for this. To point 3, the Supreme Court already addressed this and decided not to take it up for review again. Roe v. Wade will not be overturned. On the auto industry, Chrysler is now owned by foreign company Fiat. GM should simply no longer exist. Job creation? How about those ADA compliant crosswalks on Georgia 316 and 400? Are those people who put them in still employed? There are no sidewalks leading to those crosswalks and you can’t tell me anyone with a disability would enter those crosswalks in a wheelchair in a 65 MPH zone on GA 316 or 400 and make it across the intersection alive. A shovel ready project only a gravedigger will benefit from.Affordable healthcare? NOT. Together, my spouse and I are just over the income limit so we’d get no voucher to offset costs if our employer’s decide they’d rather pay the measly fines. I’d be stuck with terrible coverage at a higher price to me (and no I’m not on a Cadillac plan).

This thing could go on forever. The truth is that I will never change a liberal mind. Most of what I post here has been for those who have the willingness to see. No side is perfect. I am in fact a fiscal conservative, and a social libertarian. I believe in the freedom to be free, to choose the way God intended, for myself. I don't hold any human to a high level of perfection, not Ryan, not Mitt, nobody, not even Reagan. All will fail in the same common places, those that are common to every human. Every group, whether politics or the local community subdivision board is subject to the same corrupting power. I've even seen it in myself. So what makes anyone better than Obama? We all must put our faith in something before actually seeing it. The only way I can express it is to say that the night is so dark, that even a little light is like the brightest sunshine. I'm sure Romney will falter along the way. That is why I am putting a lot of effort into replacing the incumbents who have shown to be spineless...especially some here in Georgia. We need solid people who will hold the President accountable.

hum... this is only my personal opinion... Since I think the most important thing our country and government should do next.. Is put the budget in order:.. all the arguments re: health care, military, jobs, etc. are all pointless:... if you do not have the money to pay the bills.....I am hopeful that we will have someone who reads, understands and takes action on our budget... Please think:... how long before our creditors demand thier money....its not going to be pretty..
so yes.. I think he would and could do the job that I think is the most important..

It is more important to get people working again. If you can do this than the budget problem will start to go away.Republicans will have to admit that if you are going to spend money on the military(we spend more than the entire world put together)and corporate welfare than you need some revenue called taxes. Nothing is free. Also as long as the world is willing to loan us money at a low interest rate ,lets take advantage of it and rebuild our infrastructure and put people back to work.

Good evening. First , I would like to ask Deanna(ed) why my Norton Antivirus is screaming at me not to log on to Patch? Maybe you are hosting some malicious participants. Second, and more importantly, I want to applaud: especially David Brown for understanding what the real problem is' and recognising what will be required to solve the pressing issues. Sharon S, Tammy O., and Barbara L. for seeing that our strength as a nation has, and always will, come from our ability to unite for the common good. And shame on you Harriet, Brian O., and George W., for being the narrow-minded "my way or no-way" personalities who cannot see past their own little agendas long enough to recognise when there is something good to be had if they would only take a step towards working together. It is late, this was a long day, and I must retire.

Larry - lol. I guarantee you, guarantee you, that the liberals on here did NOT listen to Rubio or any of the other folks that spoke the other night. They get their opinions from the talking points that seek to tear them apart afterwards. Funny thing is, that after the libs get ahold of their words, tear them to shreads and call them liars, find out later that they weren't lying after all. Same - o, same - o. What else is new. To the conservative voices on here (only), I'm thrilled that we finally have some mature leaders to present to our country. McCain and other rinos were all we had for a while there. Rubio, Ryan, Cain, Sowell, Rice, and Jindal to name just a few. Thanks to conservatives willing to admit when they're wrong and correct it, we have powerful leaders to choose from now. Just in time too. Speaking of Jindal - I'm sure LA. is thankful for mature leaders this time around during a disaster. Jindal has been begging for some response from the white house. Romney is already there, Obama is only going there as an afterthought (rather, after a campaign stop in ohio). Wonder where Kanye West is now to criticize him? Oh wait...he's not a republican. lol

Brian, when I say "reach across the aisle", I'm not talking about the conditions that obama and dem congress puts on things for republicans to agree with. Ironically, there are MANY democrats that find some of the ideas of fellow democrats to be extreme and won't agree with him either. You guys neglect to mention them. So, it's not just republicans. It goes both ways. Reaching across the aisle means that they will listen to republican plans as well. They have yet to do that. Republicans have a lot of plans- they are just not considered. Clinton is to be respected in that he saw that some republican plans were good (welfare reform, contract with America) and reached out and embraced them. That's how he got re-elected. Your man is just can't bring himself to do that.

This just in...the fact-checkers were found not checking the facts as they should. The liberal "fact checkers" need fact checkers- lol. They need to stop outsourcing their information and actually find out the facts for themselves before publicizing them. Turns out that Ryan was completely correct. Obmas's exact words were.."But this "will not disrupt the lives of the people who work at Chrysler or the communities that depend on it,"... then, jobs were lost and cut. Everything he promised, gets money thrown at it (not the solution) and people lose jobs etc... The problem is not that the president doesn't want to do anything about all this, it's just that he really doesn't know how. That's what I think. This holds true for the point made at the convention- it isn't that he's a bad man, just a bad president". Romney does know how. I can't wait til November.

Tammy O. The encouragement we are sharing with each other IS contagious. If we all would just set aside our personal agendas, and attiude of "my way or no way" and start with" what is best for us all" at heart, a multitude of current issues would melt to the wayside. A little cooperation and consideration of others is the first step .Note I didn't say go belly up, I said look for the common ground that will benefit us as a whole, There is no "ME" in "TEAM".
