Athens Woman Accused of Stashing Items in Purse

Bell's Food Store reported the alleged shoplifting incident on Tuesday.

A 55-year-old Athens woman was arrested on a charge of misdemeanor theft by shoplifting Sept. 25 after an employee of Bell's Food Store accused her of stuffing items into her purse.

The woman reportedly paid for other items she'd placed in a shopping cart but not the others deputies found in her purse.  At first the deputy says the woman told him she'd purchased the two Neosporin boxes and seasoning salt at a nearby pharmacy, but she reportedly changed her story when the deputy asked the cashier to check and see if the items were indeed from Bell's.

Mary Norman Smith was transported to the Oconee County Jail and later released on bond.
