Correction: Bray Sentenced to 15 Years for Truck Theft, Serious Injury by Vehicle
A trial without a jury was held in Oconee County Superior Court this week for Kirk Devin Bray, The Oconee Enterprise reports.
Editor's note: According to the office of the Clerk of Superior Court, the 15 and 10 year prison sentences will run concurrently, not consecutively as originally reported. The correction has been made in the article.
A man authorities linked to a multi-jurisdictional stolen vehicle and heavy equipment chop shop operation has been sentenced for stealing and crashing a truck, causing serious injury to an elderly Oconee County couple.
Kirk Devin Bray, 39, was indicted in August 2011 on 16 counts stemming from the May 5 incident that same year and one count theft of a truck from LAD Truck Lines in Watkinsville on April 30, 2011.
According to The Oconee Enterprise, Bray told the court during the two-day bench trial he was sorry and "the events have wrenched the badness out of me," but his prior felony convictions and the fact that Bray fled the accident scene weighed heavily on Judge Lawton Stephens' decision.
Stephens Tuesday sentenced Bray to 15 years confinement without parole: 10 for theft and 15 for serious injury by vehicle that will run concurrently, according to the office of the Clerk of Superior Court. Upon release, Bray will be on probation for a period of five years.
Bray's attorney has since filed a motion for a new trial, according to the office of the Clerk of Superior Court.
