UGA Organization to Host Bone Marrow Drive on March 28
"Be the Match at UGA," a registered student organization at the university, is hosting a bone marrow drive on March 28. The drive will be held from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. in the Tate Student Center and is part of a large community effort to find a suitable donor for Kajal Patel. Patel is a 12-year-old Athens Academy student who is currently fighting a rare immune disorder and needs a life-saving transplant.
Bone marrow tests consist of a mouth swab and the marrow donation process is as simple as a blood donation. Students and community members are hoping to conduct a minimum of 2,400 bone marrow tests in 24 hours topping a Guinness World Record held by Ohio State University.
Patel's classmates have spearheaded an effort to distribute 20,000 donor test kits nationwide and have launched a Facebook page to rally potential donors. Doctors believe that one in 20,000 could be a match for Patel.
